The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all universities to hold a week-long celebration of the Sanksrit language in online mode starting Friday.

In a letter to the Vice Chancellor of all universities, UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said that the Sanskrit University consortium had decided to celebrate World Sanskrit Day with weeklong celebrations from July 31 to August 6.

In the letter, the UGC said the consortium suggested that celebrations should also take place at other universities.

With this in mind, “You are asked to organize online mode activities to promote Sanskrit and appreciate the fame of this great language,” said the senior UGC official in his letter to the Vice Chancellor.

Prof. Gopabandhu Mishra, Vice Chancellor of Shri Somnath Sanskrit University, Veraval, previously said in a letter that the consortium of Sanskrit universities was founded in 2019 with the merger of all 19 universities.

The letter states that Sanskrit universities celebrate World Sanskrit Day at their level every year.

Mishra asked UGC to advise all universities to celebrate Sanskrit week.

“Samskrita Bharati will help universities organize them and organize resource people and program content,” the letter said.
