The Cabinet of the Union approved the new national education policy (NEP) on July 29, 2020 and renamed the Ministry of Personnel Development the Ministry of Education.

A panel led by ex-Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief K Kasturirangan had presented the draft of the new NEP to the Union’s Minister for Human Resources Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank” when he took command last year.
The draft was then made publicly available for feedback from various stakeholders, and the Ministry of Personnel Development received two lakh proposals.

The existing NEP was developed in 1986 and revised in 1992. A new educational policy was part of the Bharatiya Janata party’s manifesto ahead of the 2014 general election.
The editorial team also considered the report by a panel headed by former cabinet secretary T S R Subramanian, which was formed by the Ministry of Human Resources Development and led by EU Minister Smriti Irani.
