A state school teacher from the Jakhar State Middle School in Udhampur District has been selected by the Ministry of Education (MoE) for the 2020 National Teacher Award.

Sunil Kumar, a committed teacher who had studied at a state school himself, organized group lessons for disadvantaged local children who were unable to access the online platforms due to a lack of resources.

“Education is the key to a better future. As a middle school we had limited resources, but I tried to make the most of them so that students could get the education they wanted. I studied at a government school myself, so I’m proud to have had the opportunity to teach at one, ”Kumar told ANI here.

“From the end of March, when the school closed, the students had to sit at home. So I came to school and created e-content including video lectures and presentations for them sent to them via Whatsapp or Youtube. Also, for students without a smartphone, I started organizing community courses for them while ensuring all SOPs for functioning during COVID-19 are followed, ”he added.

Locals from the area welcomed Kumar’s efforts, saying he deserved the award and recognition for making maximum efforts even before the COVID-19 crisis to ensure that the children received the best equipment and education possible despite the challenges.

“We are proud that our village’s teacher was selected for the award. He works very hard and is fully dedicated to raising children and maintaining school. Such people should definitely be recognized, ”said a local.

Sapna, a Grade 9 student from a family falling into the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, thanked her teacher for going overboard with her and everyone else in running the classroom classes ensure that their pursuit of knowledge is not compromised even in the crisis phase.

A total of 47 teachers from across the country will receive the National Teachers Award for 2020 according to the list published by the Union Ministry of Education on Friday.
