The United Nations Educational Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) recently released its Global Education Monitoring Report 2020. This report explains the role of women in the curriculum in different countries. According to the report, women, wherever they are in books, are less effective or subdued than traditional women and men.

Women introverted and submissive in books

After this fourth edition of the annual report, women are portrayed as less viewed in books. Not only that, the type of women who work in these professions is also described as introverted and submissive. To illustrate this, UNESCO, for example, explained that men are portrayed as doctors in books, while women play the role of the nurse.

Included for many decades

In its report, UNESCO also said that women are only shown on topics related to food, fashion and entertainment. Various courses show women in voluntary roles and men in paid jobs. However, the report also mentioned the books of some countries trying to balance this role of women.

Women are absent from 63% of science books

To illustrate this, the example of Afghanistan was given, in which women were almost missing from Class I books in 1990. At the same time, after the change of books in 2001, women were accepted into it, but again, their roles were shown as submissive and domestic, like mother, hostess, daughter or sister. According to the UNESCO report, 60 percent of Persian and foreign languages, 63 of scientific and 74 percent of social science books have no image of women.

The report mentioned in Maharashtra

The report also mentions the image enhancement in Maharashtra’s Maharashtra State Bureau of Texbook Production and Curriculum Research books to eliminate gender stereotypes in 2019. In the second grade book, women and men are seen doing housework, where a doctor and a picture of a man are shown as cooks.

What is the Global Education Monitoring Report?

The Global Education Monitoring Report is prepared by an independent team that will later be published by UNESCO. This report is based on an analysis of continuous development and efforts related to education. In the recently published report, textbooks in Italy, Spain, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, United States, Chili, Morocco, Turkey and Uganda refer to these stereotypes associated with women.
