The West and Central Railway has decided that students who show up for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and National Aptitude Test (NEET) later this month will be able to travel on Mumbai’s suburban network using special on-site services.
Passenger trains have been suspended across the country since the pandemic broke out in March. Passengers traveling on Mumbai’s suburban trains are the most vulnerable to Covid infections due to the overcrowding of compartments during office hours.
The zonal railways stated in a joint media statement that the admission card for candidates who appear for JEE and NEET is viewed as authorization to enter suburban stations with companions (parents / legal guardians) on the exam days.
Station and security officers at the stations have been instructed to make it easier for students traveling on exam days to travel. Additional booking counters will be opened at important train stations and the frequency of suburban connections will be increased accordingly, the statement said.
