What’s going viral? : A message goes viral on WhatsApp. It is alleged that due to the Corona crisis, the central government is distributing free smartphones to students across the country for online education.

A link is provided in the viral message. It is claimed that students will only receive a smartphone after registering through this link.

What is the truth of this claim?

  • During the investigation, we contacted the fact check team of the government agency PIB. The team conducted its investigation and tweeted. Which shows that there is no such scheme by the Indian government. The PIB team has labeled this claim a fake.
  • By searching for various key words related to these news items, we could not find any news items on the Internet mentioning such a scheme of central government.
  • We have checked all the tweets from the past 3 months on the Twitter handle of Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the Union Minister of Education. He did not announce such plans. MHRD means Official of the Ministry of Education website But no such plan is mentioned either.
