55.36% of Students Want Exams to Be Postponed: Ahmedabad Mirror Poll

AHMEDABAD: Anxious students, a government at the center that refuses to budge, and a joint opposition that moves the Supreme Court to raise student health and safety concerns – the JEE and JEE controversy National Admissions Cum Entrance Test (NEET) continues to boil.

Just one day before the planned JEE (September 1st), students are stressed out about whether exams will be held or postponed, even if India continues to register the world’s highest single-day Covid-19 cases in recent days. Ahmedabad Mirror decided to find out for themselves what they wanted from the students performing for JEE and NEET.

Mirror conducted a survey of students across the state. The participants were asked six questions (see box). 616 students from over 60 state schools took part in the survey. Of these, 341 students said JEE / NEET should be postponed while 275 students said it should take place. This means that 55.36 percent of students did not approve of the exams currently taking place, while 44.64 percent would like to do so as planned.

The survey was conducted online for two days, with 365 of the participating students (an estimated 59.25%) appearing for JEE and 251 or 40.75% for NEET. JEE begins September 1st and lasts through September 6th, while NEET is scheduled for September 13th.

Answers from the students

The Mirror poll received responses from no fewer than 60 schools in urban and rural Gujarat. Some of the cities that Mirror received responses from are Ahmedabad, Surat, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Morbi, Bharuch, Gandhinagar, Botad, JamJodhpur, Sarangpur, and Kadi.

Interestingly, even students from Qatar, Bangalore, Bhopal, Kolkata and Lucknow took part in the survey. As for why the exam should be postponed, some of the key responses ranged from fear of Covid-19 to student improvement. Wait until November as the colleges will start in 2021. Life is precious.

When asked why the exams shouldn’t be postponed, the students replied that we need to learn to live with the coronavirus. Exams should be held keeping students’ careers in mind to save students from wasting a whole year, Covid-19 condition may not get better after a month. If you postpone it, you will have to wait another month. The National Testing Agency (NTA) must take all precautions as students have been preparing for the exam for the past two years.
